Braj Bhoomi-the land that epitomizes the entirety of the rich Indian culture is also known as the land of Lord Krishna as it has witnessed the enchantment of the most divine Krishna Leela with the pristine love affair between Krishna & his devotee Radha rani. The Krishna Leela is a true portrayal of love, divinity, romance & everything that is highly aesthetic & Radha rani is one unique character that has always remained the most important part of the Krishna Leela. Barsana, a village 42 km away from Mathura is where Radha spent her childhood. This village is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites for the followers of Vaishnavism & especially Gaudiya Vaishnavism. They consider Radha as the most worship able Goddess or "Shakti". Holi is one very important festival of the Barsana village. Lord Krishna always used to visit Barsana to play Holi with Radha & her friends. These unique moments at Barsana narrates how Lord Krishna used to playfully tease Radha & her friends while playing Holi with them. Reacting to this act of Lord Krishna, the women folks of the village used to chase him away. Since then, men from Nandgaon-the village where Krishna spent his entire childhood always used to come to Barsana to play Holi & they would also hope to tie Flags over the Radha rani temple. Barsana is blessed with this distinction of having the only temple dedicated to Radha in India. The women of Barsana would treat the men from Nandgaon, not with colours but with sticks instead. This is how the Holi here was termed Lathmar-Holi. The men were smart enough to come fully covered & padded in obvious anticipation of the kind of welcome they would get from the women of Barsana & for the fact that they were not supposed to retaliate on that occasion. In this mock battle, the men try their best not to be captured as the unlucky ones who are led away by the women folks are thrashed by them with the sticks. They are also made to wear Female attire & dance in public. Everything that is done & celebrated is in the unique spirit of Holi when thousands of people gather inside the compound of the Radha rani temple in Barsana to witness & enjoy the Lathmaar-Holi. The crowd is seen to be in intense joy & it starts shouting "Shri Radhey" & "Shri Krishna" in all hysteria. The holi songs of the Braj mandal are sung in pure Braj Bhasha. These areas would always reverberate with the immortalized stories of Lord Krishna, Radha rani & the "Krishna Leela" & would always stand testimony to all that is pricelessly divine.
